
1) To refers to an action or events that were continued in the past.
e.g. वह सो रहा था।
- He was sleeping.
वे फुटबॉल खेल रहे थे।
- They were playing football.
वह कल से काम कर रहा था।
- He was working since yesterday.
2) Some words are used in this tense to represent a habitual and frequent action.
These words are Always, Continually, Constantly.
e.g. वह हमेशा शिकायत करती रहती थी।
- She always kept complaining.
वेलोग हमेशा दुसरो को गाली देते रहते थे।
- They were always abusing others.
वह लगातार मुझे परेशान कर रहा था।
- He was constantly irritating me.
सीता लगातार स्कूल मैराथन दौड़ में भाग ले रही थीं।
- Sita was continually participating in the school marathon race.
3) It is used when two actions started in the past together. In this case, We use the Wh-Word "While" to make sentences.
e.g. जब वह खाना बना रही थी, मैं कपडे धो रहा था।
- While she was cooking, I was washing the clothes.
जब बच्चा रो रहा था, माँ खाना बना रही थी।
- While the child was crying, the mother was cooking.
जब मैं काम कर रहा था, वह नाच रही थी।
- While I was working, she was dancing.
4) To set up an event when an action or events that were continued in the past.
Note:- In this case, Always use:-
Initial action Final action
↓ ↓
Past Continuous Past Indefinite
e.g. जब वह अंदर आया तो मैं पढ़ रहा था।
- I was reading when he came in.
मैं उससे तब मिला जब वह पार्टी से आ रहा था।
- I met him when he was coming from the party.
जब वह बाहर गया तो सूरज चमक रहा था।
- The sun was shining when he went outside.
